The Best Places To Visit In Argentina

With its strong European heritage, stunning landscapes, and rich history, Argentina is one of the most beautiful countries in South America.

Often considered a beacon of safety in the region, Argentina is now receiving attention due to Javier Milei, a self-declared libertarian who is reducing taxes and downsizing the state to improve the economy. While these reforms are promising, it’s still too early to consider Argentina a solid Plan-B destination for relocation or investment

Argentina’s potential is undeniable, and it’s a fantastic destination that every traveller should explore, perhaps more than once. In this article, we’ll show you some of Argentina's best places to visit and highlight why this country deserves a spot on your travel bucket list.

BUENOS AIRES: THE PARIS OF SOUTH AMERICA

The nickname “Paris of South America” was not randomly assigned. If you’ve ever visited Paris, you’ll be shocked at how similar it is to Buenos Aires. The elegant boulevards and architecture make the nation’s capital a place of sophistication, standing out from the rest of Latin America. Buenos Aires is a massive metropolis with lots to see and do. We’ve compiled the most important highlights to help you plan your visit to Argentina’s capital.

SAN TELMO

Located in the historic centre of Buenos Aires, San Telmo is home to antique shops and cafés and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires, a museum dedicated to contemporary art. Don’t miss the Sunday Feria de San Telmo, a busy market where you can buy from local vendors and watch live tango performances.

LA BOCA

You’re probably aware that Argentina has won many soccer world championships, including the most recent one in Qatar in 2022. Argentinians love soccer, and La Boca proves they take it seriously. The streets are like a museum, with Caminito being the most vividly painted and photographed. Check out the emblematic La Bombonera Stadium, home to the Boca Juniors soccer team.

RECOLETA

Recoleta is one of the most upscale neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, with different architectural styles imported by various immigrant communities. The main attraction is the Recoleta Cemetery, where many of Argentina’s most prominent figures rest. Beyond the cemetery, visit the Fine Arts Museum, featuring works by various artists. Finally, spend some time in Plaza Francia, a green space where fairs and performances are often hosted.

PALERMO

Palermo is a paradise for all travellers, including foodies and nature lovers. Spend the day in Bosques de Palermo, a massive park with rose gardens, lakes, and walking trails. Next, head to Palermo Soho, where you’ll find upscale stores and street art, or Palermo Hollywood up north, where you can find various restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Also, you can’t miss the Buenos Aires Japanese Garden, one of the largest outside of Japan.

PUERTO MADERO

Puerto Madero is a waterfront district that blends modernity and nature. Walk down its elegant promenades, see the skyscrapers, and dine at chic restaurants. One of the major attractions in this district is the Ecological Reserve on the Río de la Plata, a laid-back space ideal for walking, bird watching, or even cycling. At night, the Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman) is one of the best places in Argentina to take photos.

PLAZA DE MAYO

As the historic heart of Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo is one of Argentina’s most iconic squares, with landmarks like Casa Rosada, the Presidential Palace, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. The square is also a symbol of protest, where the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo march to remember the people lost during Argentina’s dictatorship.

TEATRO COLÓN

Teatro Colón is one of Argentina’s most popular landmarks and one of the world’s most renowned opera houses. It hosts live performances and often impresses visitors with its eclectic architecture. The theatre's design provides excellent acoustics, making it a top choice for singers and orchestra directors.

BARILOCHE: A GATEWAY TO THE ANDES

Located in the heart of Argentina’s Lake District, Bariloche is a picturesque town that resembles Switzerland in South America. Found at the foot of the Andes Mountains, this is the perfect setting to bask in natural beauty and spend time outdoors.

Surrounded by scenic landscapes, such as Nahuel Huapi Lake's crystal-clear waters and snow-capped mountain peaks, Bariloche might remind you of Switzerland with its wooden chalets and chocolate stores lining the streets. The crown jewel is Cerro Campanario, and a short chairlift ride up the mountain will provide you with amazing views of the region.

If you love adventure and even adrenaline, Bariloche is the place for you. During winter (June to September), Cerro Catedral, a majestic mountain, becomes a world-class ski resort. The entire area is excellent for bikers and hikers when the snow melts. Spots like Refugio Frey provide breathtaking views of lakes and rugged peaks.

MENDOZA: THE WINE CAPITAL OF ARGENTINA

Mendoza is Argentina’s premier wine region, and visiting its vineyards is an unforgettable experience. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and Malbec–an extraordinary grape variety that pairs well with steak–this region is a paradise for wine lovers and adventurers alike.

In Luján de Cuyo, Maipú, and the Uco Valley lie wineries where you can tour the estates, learn about wine production, and try some of the best wines in the world. Many vineyards also pair their wines with exquisite meals featuring local ingredients.

Due to its privileged location, Mendoza offers opportunities to spend time in nature. You can go trekking, horseback riding, or even white-water rafting in the nearby Andes. For a memorable experience, head to Aconcagua, the tallest peak in the Americas.

Mendoza also has a rich culinary tradition. Argentine dishes like empanadas, grilled meats, and provoleta–Argentinian cheese–are perfect complements to wine. The city of Mendoza is a field with tree-lined streets and busy plazas. On iconic streets like Plaza Independencia and Aristides Villanueva, you can dine and enjoy all that the city’s nightlife offers.

Autumn is perhaps the ideal time to visit as the region’s colours are most vivid, and the vineyards are busy during the grape harvest. During the colder months, you can enjoy numerous winter sports, while summer is perfect for exploring the mountains.

PATAGONIA: UNTAMED BEAUTY AT THE END OF THE WORLD

Shared by Argentina and Chile, Patagonia is a land of stunning landscapes where you can escape daily life's hustle and bustle. The Argentine side of Patagonia has rugged mountains and unique wildlife, making it an excellent place for adventurers.

EL CHALTÉN: THE TREKKING CAPITAL OF ARGENTINA

If you love hiking, El Chaltén is the perfect place for you. This is the trekking capital of Argentina, with trails for both seasoned and novice hikers. The most iconic trek leads to Mount Fitz Roy, a postcard-worthy view that will pay out after hiking for a few hours. Another must-visit is the Laguna de los Tres, a crystal-clear lake that also rewards with stunning views.

PERITO MORENO GLACIER

The Perito Moreno Glacier, a massive ice formation, is one of the most iconic sights of Patagonia and arguably a wonder of nature. This enormous glacier constantly changes shape, and ice-calving events can be watched up close from viewing platforms or boat tours.

USHUAIA: THE END OF THE WORLD

Located in the Tierra del Fuego Province, Ushuaia is considered the southernmost city on Earth. From there, hop on a boat and cross the Beagle Channel to watch sea lions and penguins.

The best time to visit depends on what you want to do. Summer (November to March) is perfect for trekking and exploring glaciers while the weather is mild and the trails are accessible. Wildlife enthusiasts should plan spring and early summer trips, while winter (June to September) is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and enjoying the snowy landscapes.

ARGENTINA’S GROWING POTENTIAL

Argentina is a beautiful country, whether you want a more urban experience or to enjoy your time in nature. From the busy streets of Buenos Aires to the untouched beauty of Patagonia, you will want to return many times. However, at this time, it’s best as a vacation place and not for long-term residency or investment.

Under Milei’s leadership, Argentina is undergoing deep economic reforms to reduce taxes and downsize the state. I am optimistic that the country will prosper, but challenges such as inflation and currency instability remain. More stable options like Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, or Panama may be better if you are considering relocating or securing a Plan-B residency

CONCLUSION

Argentina is a land of beauty and diversity and a must-have on your bucket list. Its cultural richness, natural beauty, and friendly locals make it an incredible country that deserves more than one visit. Whether exploring vibrant Buenos Aires, trekking in Patagonia, or sipping wine in Mendoza, Argentina offers unforgettable experiences for every type of traveller.

The country is far from an ideal Plan-B destination, but it’s worth keeping an eye on its developments in the coming years.
