Romania's Annulled Election: Unpacking The Consequences

As the geopolitical winds remain turbulent, the latest crisis has erupted in Romania. On December 24, 2024, nationalist leader Călin Georgescu, known for his anti-NATO stance and alleged pro-Russian ties, won the first round of the presidential elections. However, the Romanian Constitutional Court later annulled the results, escalating political tensions.

This strange decision, unprecedented in the European Union, is based on the claim that the Russians supported Georgescu's election campaign on TikTok. With this baseless claim, which is not backed by any concrete evidence, the Romanian Constitutional Court has clearly intervened in free elections and carried out a civil coup.

While the arbitrary annulation of the elections raises questions about whether there is a democracy in Romania, the EU's silence in the face of this crime of democracy remains a source of shame. It was announced that the new presidential elections will be held on May 4, 2025, but whether Georgescu will be allowed to participate is still unclear.

Romania is one of the most important regions of NATO's strategy to encircle Russia. NATO and Brussels have already made huge military and political investments in Romania. When Romania's democratic politics jeopardized the Western Bloc's strategy of military escalation, the globalists did not hesitate to trash democratic principles. This alarming incident is also a sign of the greater risks we may face in the near future.

As global tensions rise, competing powers are prepared to use Machiavellian tactics to bring countries in line with their policies. Mark my words; this will be the match that starts the fire. Building a Plan-B to protect your wealth and freedom is even more important in these uncertain days.

Now, let's take a closer look at the shameful political developments in Romania and their implications.

WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS HAD NOT BEEN ANNULLED?

Romania, governed by a semi-presidential system, held the first round of the presidential elections on November 24, 2024. In the first round, independent candidate Georgescu came in first with 22.95% of the votes. Elena Lasconi from the center-right Save Romania Union (USR) came in second with 19.18% of the votes. Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu came in third with 19.15% of the votes. George Simion, the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) candidate, received 15.23% of the votes.

According to the election results, Georgescu and Lasconi, a pro-EU liberal democrat, were set to face off in the second round. With the outcome seemingly inevitable, the prospect of Georgescu’s victory alarmed the EU and NATO. The race was compared to the U.S. presidential matchup between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, with Lasconi standing little chance against Georgescu.

Immediately after the elections, the anti-NATO AUR announced its support for Georgescu. Georgescu was forced to resign due to a campaign against him when the AUR wanted to make him a prime ministerial candidate in 2022. Therefore, the total votes of Georgescu and the AUR are approximately 38%.

The PSD and the PNL, currently partners in a coalition government, are fighting among themselves. It is also clear that these two parties, which received approximately 36% of the total votes, will not be able to support Lasconi strongly. Since it is known that Georgescu can easily collect nationalist and conservative votes from other parties, the fear of those who oppose him has reached its peak.

Therefore, with great hypocrisy, instead of holding free elections, they intervened in the elections through the judiciary. I do not know how Romanian democracy will maintain its air of legitimacy through this shameful incident, but certainly, the people who committed this crime are not concerned with democratic elections.

WHat WAS THE REASON FOR THE COUP AGAINST GEORGESCU?

The president, the head of state and commander-in-chief, shares executive powers with the prime minister in Romania. However, he is in power crafting foreign policy and appointing the prime minister to form the government.

As a result of the 2024 parliamentary elections, no party could form a single majority in the Romanian parliament. Although there is a coalition of centrist parties, the problems experienced by this government within itself weaken the power of the coalition. Under a potential Georgescu presidency, forming a government aligned with his policies was a strong possibility.

Georgescu based his campaign on nationalism and self-sufficiency. He particularly opposed the country's foreign policy being directed by the EU and NATO. He put the Ukrainian War at the center of this entire debate. He pledged to end Romania's military aid to Ukraine and to stop Ukraine's grain exports through Romania. He argued that taking sides in this war was against Romania's national interests.

Georgescu also criticized Romania's NATO membership, describing the NATO alliance's missile defence system in Deveselu as a national "shame." Georgescu called for improved relations with Russia and even for Romania to benefit from "Russian wisdom" in shaping its international relations.

However, despite his controversial views, Georgescu has publicly denied being pro-Russia and has argued that Romania should be re-established as a self-sufficient sovereign state. His past praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his stance on the Ukraine conflict has caused significant unrest within the Western Bloc. The main reason for this lies in Romania's importance to NATO.

Romania's strategic position on NATO's eastern flank, key bases, and support for Ukraine make it vital for NATO. Georgescu's pro-Russia stance could disrupt EU security policies

WHY IS ROMANIA IMPORTANT TO NATO?

Romania is a NATO and EU member state, bordering the Black Sea and sharing a border of approximately 650 kilometres with Ukraine. This location places it in a strategic position on the eastern flank.

The Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, located on the Black Sea, is one of NATO's most important facilities on the eastern flank. It is planned to become the largest NATO base in Europe by 2040. The Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System is also one of NATO's most important measures against ballistic missile threats.

Romania is also one of the key NATO members that supplied weapons to Ukraine during the Ukrainian War. For example, Romania decided to donate a Patriot missile system to Ukraine and also directly supported the Ukrainian air force by providing training to Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets. Therefore, with the Ukrainian War, Romania has become one of the most important strategic regions on NATO's eastern flank.

Georgescu's rapprochement with Russia contradicts the EU's sanctions and isolation strategies against Russia. A victory by Georgescu could seriously shake the EU's common foreign policy and security strategies.

HOW DID THE EU REACT TO THE ANNULATION OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS?

The EU Commission supported the intervention in the democratic elections. The EU declared its deep concern about so-called possible foreign interventions in the elections, stating that such interventions were unacceptable. The EU also ignored the judicial intervention in the democratic elections, noting that the EU respected Romania's domestic law.

Following the annulment of the elections, Georgescu applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), claiming that the cancellation was unfair and that his democratic rights were violated.

However, the ECHR rejected Georgescu's appeal against the Romanian Constitutional Court's decision to cancel the 2024 presidential elections. The ECHR unanimously rejected the application, claiming that Georgescu's request fell outside the scope of the Court's authority to impose interim measures.

They will not allow Georgescu to re-join the elections. This whole theatre was staged so that only a globalist candidate approved by the EU could win the presidential elections in Romania. Brussels will design Romanian politics with a rigged election and ignore the will of the Romanian people. The collapsed Romanian democracy is only collateral damage for them. The political crisis Romania will fall into will probably last for many years, and the Romanian capacity of democratic politics to solve national problems will collapse.

CONCLUSION

Georgecu's election victory has once again shown that the Western Bloc is determined to continue NATO's plan to encircle Russia at all costs. The lifes of millions of people or the democratic elections glorified as the most fundamental institutions of modern civilization are like pawns that can be discarded in this global chess game.

Can we claim that this blow to the Romanian elections will not happen to any other European country that dares to oppose the policies of the EU and the globalists? Unfortunately, the progress towards a new world war continues steadily.

Mark my words; this is the match that starts the fire. The tension between Russia and NATO will continue to escalate through Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Baltic countries. Ultimately, the possibility of the tension between the Western and Eastern Blocs becoming hot wars is increasing.

Building a Plan-B to protect your freedom and wealth is more urgent than ever in the rapidly escalating, unbalanced global geopolitical struggle. I would be happy to help you on this journey.
