The $40T U.S. Debt Crisis: How To Protect Your Wealth From The Fiat Trap

Written by Mikkel Thorup | September 07 2026

The gross national debt of the U.S. has officially crossed the $40 trillion USD threshold. Even more insane than the amount of debt is the fact that the U.S. Treasury has been borrowing an additional $1 trillion USD almost every four to five months on average in recent years. As the U.S. has to take on new debt to meet the interest payments on its old debt, it is mathematically heading towards a dead end.

Unfortunately, this is a global problem. Since the whole world relies on the U.S. dollar, America's careless borrowing ends up spreading its inflation to everyone else. As a result, bond yields are being pushed rapidly upwards, forcing interest rates worldwide to rise. This is leading to a strong financial reaction against the U.S. dollar, as it forces many countries to make difficult financial decisions.

While many central banks, especially in China, are beginning to accumulate large gold reserves, the U.S. dollar's share of global reserves remains well below its historical highs as central banks increasingly diversify their reserve holdings. These developments will undoubtedly hurt fiat savings, as we are entering a new era where the soaring U.S. debt burden and the U.S. dollar's reserve currency status simply cannot survive together.

In this article, I will break down the severity of the U.S. debt crisis, how it impacts global bond markets, and what you can do to protect your wealth from an approaching U.S. dollar meltdown.

The purchasing power of the American dollar has been steadily decreasing due to rampant money printing

THE CORE CONTRADICTION: INFLATION VS. RESERVE STATUS

The rapid expansion of the U.S. sovereign debt is trapping the Federal Reserve in an inevitable mathematical trap. The moment Washington attempts to pay off its out-of-control debt by printing money to lower borrowing costs, it will harm the U.S. dollar greatly as the global reserve currency.

However, sustaining this debt burden at current revenue levels is no longer feasible. Net interest payments alone amount to approximately 19% of total federal revenue. This figure is insanely alarming, but worse, the borrowed money is being spent on unproductive expenditures. It only covers structural deficits caused by social welfare programs, ongoing overseas military spending, and rising financing costs.

A $40 trillion USD debt theoretically means every American is roughly $116,000 USD in debt. However, the federal tax base is already dangerously concentrated. IRS data shows that the top 1% of earners pay around 40% of all individual federal income taxes. Raising tax rates on a small segment of producers yields diminishing returns and causes capital flight instead of closing trillion-dollar annual deficits. Since real spending cuts are politically impossible and higher taxes cannot close the deficit, the only remaining mechanism for government action is devaluing the currency. Rational investors and foreign governments see the situation: holding unbacked U.S. paper debt means a continuous loss of real purchasing power.

GLOBAL BOND MARKET CRISIS

Washington’s borrowing addiction exports immediate volatility to every bond market on Earth. As the U.S. government floods the market with U.S. Treasuries to fund multi-trillion-dollar deficits, it pushes the 10-year yield toward 5%. High U.S. interest rates put other countries under pressure by making dollar-denominated assets more attractive and increasing the risk of capital outflows and currency depreciation. This can put upward pressure on borrowing costs in Europe and East Asia, raising the cost of mortgages, business loans, and sovereign debt.

If a government keeps spending money it doesn't have, it causes prices to rise. This is especially true if the central bank steps in to finance that borrowing by creating more money. This moral trap creates a worldwide destructive chain reaction, leading to a borrowing crisis.

Nowhere is this crisis more obvious than in Japan, the largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury securities. If the Bank of Japan raises interest rates to narrow the yield gap and defend the yen, it inflicts massive capital losses on its own balance sheet and blows up its domestic debt servicing. If Tokyo does nothing, the yen will rapidly depreciate. This will lead to heavy energy import costs and food inflation, systematically destroying the Japanese middle class. They have run out of road. The Japanese government must now choose between sovereign insolvency and the total debasement of their currency.

This deadlock triggers a systemic threat to Washington. To prop up a collapsing currency without hiking rates into insolvency, East Asian central banks have only one lever left: selling off their foreign-exchange reserves, which are overwhelmingly U.S. Treasuries. Governments that spent decades dutifully financing American deficits are realizing that holding depreciating paper from an over-leveraged debtor is a toxic balance-sheet risk. If Japan and other Asian countries sell U.S. Treasury bonds to protect their currencies, they would eliminate a primary buyer of American debt. When that happens, the U.S. Treasury will either have to offer even higher yields to attract private buyers or rely entirely on the Federal Reserve to close the gap. This would seal the structural collapse of the global fiat money system.

The world’s largest economies are reducing their reliance on U.S. paper debt and accumulating physical gold as protection against dollar debasement and Western financial control

WORLD’S BIGGEST ECONOMIES ARE BETTING ON GOLD OVER THE U.S. DOLLAR

American fiscal irresponsibility has produced an easily traceable consequence: central banks around the world are increasing their allocation to gold and reducing their exposure to U.S. Treasuries. As a result, physical gold has now surpassed U.S. Treasuries in global reserves. Financial planners at the sovereign level are looking at Washington's massive debt burden and recognizing that holding paper debt from an over-leveraged state guarantees a loss in real purchasing power. The fundamental trust that underpins fiat debt has broken, triggering a broader move away from U.S. paper assets.

Besides the unsustainable American sovereign debt, there is another driver for this flight from the U.S. dollar: weaponization of the global financial system. When the U.S. and its Western allies decided to freeze sovereign nations' foreign exchange reserves and cut off access to international clearing networks, they permanently altered the global risk calculation. The non-Western world saw that dollar-denominated assets held in Western institutions could be locked away at any moment for political reasons. The problem for the U.S. is that you cannot weaponize the global reserve currency while simultaneously pressuring other countries to buy your government bonds.

No wonder the BRICS bloc, led by China, is working on an exit strategy from the U.S. dollar. While increasingly settling trade outside the U.S. dollar, they are aggressively accumulating physical gold to create a financial architecture completely independent of Western control. Data confirms this transformation. Gold now accounts for approximately 27% of total official reserves, surpassing the share held in U.S. Treasuries. Although much of that increase reflects the sharp rise in gold prices, continued central-bank purchases reinforce the broader trend toward greater gold exposure. Domestically held physical gold cannot be destroyed by sanctions, freezes, or Federal Reserve inflation.

A debt-ridden empire cannot sustain endless wars forever. As Washington’s treasury weakens, so does its ability to project power and dictate terms abroad

THE MILITARY LIMITS OF AN INSOLVENT EMPIRE

Being the world's leading military power demands a solvent treasury. Fiscal constraints can ultimately limit geopolitical freedom of movement, which in turn affects confidence in the reserve currency system. Washington's rapidly declining ability to finance endless foreign interventions doesn’t look pretty. The world now realizes that the check the U.S. used to finance decades of overseas operations and proxy wars has bounced. Hard power is an economic derivative, and when the financial engine driving it becomes insolvent, the state's capacity to project authority abroad collapses with it.

The operational limits of a debt-ridden army are now being revealed. Deterrence has stalled across the Middle East, specifically in conflicts involving Iran. The U.S. is no longer operating in a unilateral vacuum, as these regional conflicts are now complicated by direct strategic and economic backing from China and Russia. Washington is discovering a hard truth: you cannot print your way out of asymmetric warfare against heavily subsidized proxies. The enormous cost of maintaining these military deployments proves that the U.S. can no longer dictate geopolitical conditions on demand.

These never-ending wars pull critical resources, such as naval fleets, ammunition, and leadership focus, away from key flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific. As Washington exhausts its already depleted treasury in an effort to maintain control over the Middle East, its strategic vulnerabilities around Taiwan and South Korea are steadily increasing.

A heavily indebted state cannot simultaneously exercise hegemony on multiple global fronts, and capital markets are beginning to price in the fact that America’s deterrence in East Asia is seriously jeopardized by its own ailing balance sheet.

Protecting your wealth means moving beyond paper assets and into tangible investments in neutral jurisdictions like Panama

TANGIBLE CAPITAL OVER PAPER LIABILITIES

For the sake of your economic sovereignty and the future of your family, you should understand the terrifying scale of the U.S. debt and its most probable consequences. Holding a traditional 60/40 portfolio of stocks and Western government bonds is extremely dangerous, even self-destructive. When governments carry mathematically unpayable debt, paper assets become uncompensated liabilities. You cannot protect your purchasing power by lending capital to the very institutions destroying the currency. The only real defence is dual diversification: moving out of vulnerable fiat into hard, un-debaseable assets, and moving capital out of conflict zones into neutral territories.

Central banks have been increasing their allocations to physical gold. You should consider the logic behind this sovereign diversification strategy, with one key difference: You do not want to leave your physical gold in the Western financial system. Store gold in private, offshore vaults to preserve your purchasing power and keep some of your wealth outside the reach of creeping Western surveillance.

The other important strategic move is to invest your wealth in real estate in neutral jurisdictions. In doing so, you protect both your capital and your freedom of movement. Many Latin American countries, such as Panama, Paraguay, and Costa Rica, understand this need and offer territorial tax systems and straightforward residency-by-investment programs.

You should keep in mind that modern welfare states are funded by a shockingly small group of people, and Western governments will inevitably squeeze this remaining tax base to cover their unfunded liabilities. Stop financing your own expropriation.

A $40 trillion U.S. debt makes currency debasement inevitable. Your way out is a Plan-B built outside the Western financial system

CONCLUSION

The arithmetic of a $40 trillion USD national debt guarantees the destruction of paper wealth. The U.S. cannot tax their way out of this deficit, and the rest of the Western countries will follow the American example. Their only remaining mechanism is severe currency debasement combined with regulatory fences, such as exit taxes and capital controls, designed to trap domestic wealth. Central banks dumping U.S. Treasuries to stockpile physical gold are signalling the structural collapse of the paper system.

Protecting your wealth requires moving it completely outside the sphere of influence of Western balance sheets. This is the rational defence of your private property and financial sovereignty. You must move capital out of vulnerable banking systems and anchor it in foreign real estate, private offshore vaults, and second residencies before state finances deteriorate further.

You should execute your exit strategy before governments legislate away your leverage. To build your Plan-B, you can download our free special report on Plan-B Residencies & Instant Citizenships.
